Creating a Discount Service
To create a discount for your jobs, you will want to create one or more "Discount" services. These services are like any other service, but you will want to use a negative number for the Amount or Rate. Then on any job that needs this discount, or promotion, you will select the appropriate discount service and enter the rates or amounts as negative values. You may want to discuss with your accountant the best setup for your business. Sometimes it is best to show your total sales for a service, regardless of any discounts, so you know "how much business" you did for that service, rather than simply putting the discounted amount for the service.
The following image show two examples of using a discount service item for a discount:
Job Specific Discount Amount
The first discount line shows a specific discount amount. This would be entered as a manual entry, where you calculate the discount and then enter the amount as a negative number (in this case it is 20% of the first service line). The service itself would be setup with a "Job Specific" Billing Type. You would type in this value as a negative number into the Actual field when you are entering or editing that service line. The calculation you make is a manual calculation and entry, and here is how you might setup a discount service like this:
Fixed Discount Amount
You could also create the Service as a "Fixed" Billing Type, if it will always be the same. For example, in a radio add you might say, "Tell us that you heard our ad on KICU Radio and get $20 off your order," then you would create a Fixed service type with an amount of -$20.00, like the one shown below:
Discount Quantity and Rate
The third line in the example shows that a quantity of 3 times the rate of -$5.00 creates a discount of -$15.00. You would use this when giving a discount based on the number of units that were being discounted. For example, if you have a discount of $5.00 per room for your service package, and there were 4 rooms, then you would enter a Qty of 4 and a rate of -$5.00 to get a per unit discount.
